Contemporary philosophical as well as scientific studies of mind and cognition has been very impressive. We will learn theories of the ontological status of mind. They include (Cartesian) substance dualism, logical behaviorism, the Brain state type identity thesis, functionalism (especially machine functionalism), instrumentalism, and eliminativism. We will then consider problems that have been puzzling philosophers and scientists. They are the mind-body problem, the nature of intentionality, mental representation, artificial intelligence, consciousness and subjectivity, and the autonomy of psychology.
